Learn to solve a 2x2 cube (Pocket Cube)

This guide is for those who have basic knowledge of solving a 2x2 cube but want to improve their skills and learn more advanced techniques. If you are new to cubes, we recommend reading this beginner's guide first.

Step 1: Solving the first layer

Find the corner with the colors white/red/blue on your cube. When the corner is correctly placed and matches the picture, you can proceed to the next step.

Then find the corner with the colors white/blue. Move this corner down under its correct position (as shown in the picture). Note that your cube may look slightly different as the corners can be rotated differently.

Your cube can be in one of the following six cases. Find the case that matches and follow the corresponding algorithm:

Case 1:

F D F’ D' F D F’

Case 2:

F D F'

Case 3:

F’ D’ F

Case 4:

F D F’ D' F D F’

Case 5:

F’ D’ F D F’ D’ F

Case 6:

L D2 L’ D’ L D L’

When the cube matches the picture, proceed to the next step.

Now find the corner with the colors white/orange/green, and move it under its correct position.

Solve the third corner using one of the six cases. When the corner matches the picture, proceed to the last corner.

The last corner, white/green/red, should now also be placed under its correct position.

Solve the third corner using one of the six cases. When the last corner is in place, you have solved the first layer of your 2x2 cube.

Step 2: Placing the corners in the last layer

Place the cube with the white side down. Your goal is now to make the top layer yellow. There are seven possible scenarios for the yellow layer. Match your cube with one of the pictures below and follow the corresponding algorithm.

OLL H

R2 U2 R U2 R2

OLL L

F (R U') (R' U' R U) (R' F')

OLL Pi

F (R U R' U') (R U R' U') F’

OLL Antisune

R' U' R U' R' U2 R

OLL T

(R U R' U') (R' F R F')

OLL U

F (R U R' U') F’

OLL Sune

L U L' U L U2 L’

When the top layer has become yellow, proceed to step 3.

Step 3: Rotate the corners to get yellow on top

Now the top of your cube is yellow. There are only two possible scenarios left, as shown below. It's okay if the colors in the pictures don't exactly match your cube. Rotate your cube until some of the corners are correctly positioned, and match your cube with one of the two cases.

PLL Adjacent

R U R' U' R' F R2

U' R' U' R U R' F’

PLL Diagonal

F R U' R' U' R U R' F'

R U R' U' R' F R F’
